Convergence Empirics Across Economies with ( Some ) Capital Mobility

چکیده

This paper uses a model of growth and imperfect capital mobility across multiple economies to characterize the dynamics of (cross-country) income distributions. This allows convenient study of the convergence hypothesis, and reveals, where appropriate, polarization and clumping within subgroups. The data show little cross-country convergence; instead, the important features are persistence, immobility, and polarization, exempli ed by \convergence club" or \twin peaks" dynamics.

Convergence across countries and regions: theory and empirics

This paper surveys the recent literature on convergence across countries and regions. I discuss the main convergence and divergence mechanisms identified in the literature and develop a simple model that illustrates their implications for income dynamics. I then review the existing empirical evidence and discuss its theoretical implications. Early optimism concerning the ability of a human capi...

Regional Unemployment and Human Capital in Transition Economies

Regional Unemployment and Human Capital in Transition Economies Differences in regional unemployment in post-communist economies are large and persistent. We show that inherited variation in human-capital endowment across the regions of four such economies explains the bulk of regional unemployment variation there and we explore potential explanations for this outcome through related capital an...

Mobile Capital, Local Externalities and Industrialization1

This paper seeks to understand how industrialization is distributed geographically when capital is mobile and labor is not. A stylized model of a spatial economy is constructed where individuals not employed in industry work in traditional activities. Results show that convergence across locations is characterized by a succession of catching-up episodes. One one location at a time industrialize...

Empirics for Economic Growth and Convergence Empirics for Economic Growth and Convergence

The convergence hypothesis has generated a huge empirical literature: this paper critically reviews some of the earlier key ndings, clari es their implications, and relates them to more recent results. Particular attention is devoted to interpreting convergence empirics. The main ndings are: (1) The much-heralded uniform 2% rate of convergence could arise for reasons unrelated to the dynamics o...

Regional convergence of output per worker in China : A neoclassical interpretation

Regional output per worker has converged across Chinese provinces in 19791989. The estimated rate of convergence is 2.2 percent. This rate of convergence can be explained by neoclassical growth model conditional on assumptions about factor mobility and production elasticities. My empirical results show that capital mobility has been high across Chinese provinces and that the production elastici...
